Trip Report: a Weekend Fishing at Makah Bay
The First day, Thursday, was a halibut day. Bill and I punched through the surf at around 7 in the morning and headed out to some familiar waypoints from previous years and went to work. The weather was beautiful but the halibut didn’t seem hungry. While Bill proceeded to catch an endless amount of great-sized rockfish, I stubbornly stuck with it and finally hooked a 35 pound halibut at around 2 in the afternoon. Not a huge fish, but a tasty one for sure.
Friday was not a halibut day so we spent our time filling our kayaks with rockfish, lingcod, and cabezon. There certainly were plenty of hungry fish around, especially undersized lingcod. The weather could not have been better - small surf, abundant sunshine, and little to no wind. The ocean water here is still pretty cold, so we wore our drysuits but I ended up splashing myself to cool down a few times.
Last day of the weekend was Saturday and also a halibut day. The weather was cloudy with a sprinkle or two, but still plenty friendly. I covered about ten miles and worked hard for a halibut but just couldn’t seem to pick one up. I stopped at a couple of reefs on my way to the beach and picked up some great rockfish and a nice cabezon as consolation.
The Neah Bay area is a magical place and I always look forward to spending time there.
