Mt. Hood Snowshoe & XC Ski

Tree branches bowed to a white frosting of new-fallen snow.  The broad white meadows glittered under a bright sun in a clear-blue sky.
It had started out another gray, foggy day down in the Willamette valley, but NW Discoveries had transported a small group to Trillium Lake Sno-Park on Mt. Hood National Forest.

Those learning how to cross-country ski stayed on the well-packed trails, while the snowshoers meandered on and off trail, winding through the trees and then following a series of meadows to the popular lake.

Once off the beaten path, it was more challenging to weave between overhanging branches or break trail through deep drifts in the open meadows. Techniques for traversing difficult terrain were shared by the NW Discoveries guide, and basic route-finding skills discussed and practiced.

Views of the mountain got better and better as we approached Trillium Lake and then hugged its shore.  A long lunch was had sitting on the dam, watching the afternoon shadows grow across the snow-covered lake, and beholding the mountain -- picking out details of Timberline Lodge and identifying features of Mt. Hood's peak.

After another jaunt back to the van, we warmed up with hot drinks and snacks, recounted highlights of our adventure, and headed back to Portland.
