Snow Play with NW Discoveries
Gear News | Camping | Skiing
Next Adventure sponsored snowshoe and cross-country trips to Mt Hood with NW Discoveries this past weekend. Six lucky folk got to explore the White River valley of Mt. Hood. NA's own Greg and Andrew instructed and led the tours. The mountain gave us a bit of everything, from sun to rain, and included a dusting of winter-wonderland snow.
Want to get out and enjoy the mountain more? Come by Next Adventure and find out how we can help you get there!
Marmot Vs. Mountain Hardware in the Battle-O-the-BBQ's:
Website News | Apparel | Camping ![]() |
It was just a year ago that Next Adventure opened with Mountain Hardware and Marmot and began selling their gear and apparel. These are two incredible companies that set the bar in high quality outdoor gear and who's representatives know all the great details of their products and love what they do. This weekend our local Mountain Hardware rep., Jack Powell, and local Marmot rep., Stewart McCornack, "cooked off" for all of the staff and friends of Next Adventure. As they are both awesome, we felt it might be the only way to determine who was our favorite. Jack's BBQ ribs and Stewart's juicy lamb were incredibly good and it was impossible to decide. Darn it. Two trophies were in order and it looks like they might have to face off again. Jack and Stewart, we know it was a big week for both of you and we enjoyed the food and good company to the fullest. Thank you so much! It's a pleasure doing more than just business.

John Day Multi-day: Dale to Monument

A few folks from Next Adventure and some friends hit the John Day River this summer for a multi-day paddle: 44 miles of abundant II, II+'s and a couple class III rapids on the North Fork from Dale to Monument . We put in on Camas Creek at Tollgate Campground just North of Dale and paddled for three days (camping two nights, riverside) to the county park & boat ramp in Monument. The put in, Camas Creek, is swift without eddies and a bit of a heart pounder to get in with all the gear and go for it. The run is fairly remote and if you swim and lose a paddle or your boat (yikes) the hike out would be a long one. We paddled the run unscathed though, and a day ahead of schedule- the extra time to prepare to re-enter civilization was a nice bonus. If you're interested in taking a multi-day paddle trip like this one, here are a few helpful tips we can offer up from our experience. Click image (top left) to see more pics. |
Costa Rica to Nicaragua: An equatorial escape...
Shop News | Camping|

"Next Adventure employees Evan and Caitlin kicked off their rain-gear and headed south in April for some more equatorial weather (sunshine!). Arriving in Costa Rica and heading strait for Nicaragua, the two divided their time hiking, surfing, and eating lots of pineapple. Sneaking a bike trip in also gave a great look into rural Nicaragua. Hiding from crowds of drunken sunburned types, these two crammed in as much of each country as possible in two weeks, getting to both coasts and well acquainted with the fabulous Central American transit system." |
Next Adventure Supports Scout Camporees
Shop News | Camping | ClimbingDespite the cool and grey, the camping season has returned to our fair Northwest. The last weekend of April, the clouds parted and the sun shone on many local district Scout Camporees. Next Adventure supports Scouting by providing outdoor skills instruction and sponsoring events.

Next Adventure brought a ClimbMax climbing wall to the Sunset Trail Camporee at Willamette Mission State Park. Hundreds of Scouts got the opportunity to climb the towering wall, gaining confidence as they were skillfully coached and belayed by Darren and Josh from ClimbMax. Bryan and Greg manned the Next Adventure booth, handing out free raffle tickets and answering questions about outdoor equipment. |
Teaming up with Andy and Bax, Next Adventure gave away boxes of great outdoor gear, including a Mountainsmith mountaineering backpack and a Vaude Galaxy II tent. Next Adventure also donated raffle prizes to the Columbia Gorge District Camporee that same weekend.
The Lewis & Clark District Camporee was held the first weekend of May at the Butte Creek Scout Ranch. NA Camping Staffer Evan was there to provide gear demos and donating a Coleman Perfect Flow stove, a Texsport 5-man tent, and many laser pointers, pocketknives, compasses and socks in a free raffle.

Shop News | Camping | ClimbingNext Adventure's own Eagle Scouts, Deek and Greg, made a trip earlier this week down to Camp Melakwa, a Boy Scout Summer Camp nestled in between the Mt Washington and Three Sisters Wilderness Areas. There they lent a hand teaching Scouts rock climbing and belaying.
Melakwa is a "Scout Skills" camp, focusing on the basics of the outdoor experience. "Wow," said Greg, "I wish I could have climbed a mountain when I went to summer camp." Greg got his wish at Melakwa, as he assisted a group of scouts climb Middle Sister Mountain. Here are a few photos of their trip:

Timberline Trail Update
Gear News | CampingThe Mt Hood National Forest has issued a report that the Timberline Trail was washed out below Eliot Glacier during last winter's flooding, and that they do not plan to fix it this summer. There is no easy alternate route, so that means the Timberline Trail will not be a hikable loop this year.

There are more closures of roads and trails, including the Salmon River road and the bridge to Ramona Falls, so check with the Forest Service before you head out. Find out more details on the Mt Hood Conditions Page.
Meanwhile, for the rest of the Timberline Trail that is open, most of the south-facing stretches are snow-free, but expect some deep snow on the shady north side of ridges. An exploratory trip up north-side Vista Ridge on July 3 revealed plenty of snow covering the trail above 5000 feet. A trip up the South side July 9 proved snow-free above 6000'.
More details can be found in an article by the Oregonian.
