Madrone Wall: Updates

|

Below are important dates to remember for those of you interested in the Madrone Wall and contributing to this project:

"Environmental and economic studies co-funded by the County and the Madrone Wall Preservation Committee along with the Clackamas River Basin Conservation Alliance, a local citizen group, determined that it would be uneconomical, even under the best conditions, to quarry this site. It is imperative that this site now be preserved as a park or open space before it becomes a private quarry or is developed into tracts of trophy homes. The Madrone Wall is one of the last and best treasures..." To read more go to www.savemadrone.org/future.htm

*the links below are detailed posts on cascadeclimbers.com/forum regarding the events

February 5th: Film Festival benefiting the Madrone Wall. at the Hollywood. Thanks to Jeff Alzner for putting this together.

Wellness Update

|
Next Adventure staff are a group of unique and wonderful people who are open to growth and change that will improve their quality of life. To help enable this process Rachel Wagner, who works in our climbing department and is studying sustainable living and alternative medicine, has been organizing clinics and trips. Last week she took a group to the Lents International Farmers Market to shop for foods and produce grown and prepared locally in the Portland area. Find out more about this market at www.localharvest.org.

The week before, Rachel organized a chiropractic information clinic with Dr. Chris Zander. Next Adventure hosted breakfast while participants learned about this complementary and alternative medicine health care profession that focuses on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Dr. Zander, an avid outdoor adventurer himself, described treatment and prevention techniques for muscular injuries that often plague active people and helped to clear up some of the mystery behind 'adjustments.' He also armed participants with information for at-home therapy to help treat sore and contracted muscles.
*If you are an individual or business that would like to share your sustainable living or alternative health care practices with us contact the shop and ask for Rachel.

Adopt-a-Crag: Broughton's Bush Whack & BBQ

|

If you're a climber in the Portland area you'll be interested in coming out Saturday, June 7th, to this Access Fund Adopt-a-Crag event at Lewis and Clark State Park. Starting at 9 a.m. volunteers (maybe you?) will begin working at Broughton's Bluff to improve access trails and crags, do a little climbing and build up an appetite for some good eats. This event is "hosted by Access Fund Regional Coordinator Tony Holmes, Climb Max Mountaineering, Next Adventure, and the Stoneworks Climbing Gym Youth Team" [http://accessfund.org/events/aac.php]- its a great opportunity to meet other local climbers, learn more about climbing in the area and have some fun. Hope to see you there!

15 Days of Freedom: Bishop and Back

|

Next Adventure employees Rachel and Seth recently returned from a 15-day climbing trip in the Eastern Sierra region of California. Popularized in the early 2000's by climbers like Lisa Rands for its incredible boulders, there are also plenty of sport and traditional, multi-pitch and alpine routes scattered throughout the valley. Seth and Rachel set up base-camp outside of Bishop at a primitive and dusty (but cheap!) climbers' campground and spent most of their time climbing in the Owens River Gorge. When the desert got too hot, they explored the steep granite of the Rock Creek area and short trad lines in nearby Alabama Hills. Of course, you can't go to Bishop and not visit the now-famous Buttermilk boulders. Rest days were spent seeking shade and caffeine at the coffee-shop in town, or hitting the local restaurant for weekday happy hour (which was really, literally one hour), tracking down free hot springs and searching for petroglyphs. Rachel and Seth returned to Portland via Smith Rocks near Bend, OR, and spent their last day of freedom clipping bolts in their 'home crag.'
