Hab-Rec Disc Golf Tournament
By Renee
Fall settled in this year just in time for the Hab-Rec Disc Golf Tournament (Habitual Recreational) at Riverbend Disc Golf Course at Milo McIver State Park. Nearly 100 participants toughed it out and faced the rain as most seasoned Oregon disc-golfers would, and delivered their best. I hung out at Disc Golf Central, which included our Next Adventure booth, standing by ready to refresh players with beverages, fresh wool socks, hand-warmers, glow sticks, and stickers. We neighbored up next to Jay’s Huk Lab Fly Gear tent.
After announcements, players dispersed to their starting places and waited for the two-minute airhorn + shouting (to indicate two minutes before start) followed shortly by the start signal. Then it was quiet at Disc Golf Central except for the occasional 10AM beer drinker.
Before long lunch time fell upon us, and thanks to the Food Pimp everyone had sandwiches waiting. THEN everyone streamed in for the beverages, wool socks, hand-warmers, glow sticks, and stickers. Just before it was time for everyone to go back for round 2, the Rain Gods lashed out with buckets of rain! Thanks to someone’s Doppler Radar/cell phone, word soon spread that blue skies were on the way. THEN round 2 began. This is when I was most entertained, as people began to return to the cooler again and again. I began keeping track of people’s reasoning for retrieving ANOTHER beverage. [Upon reaching into the cooler]:
-“Just for a little comfort”
-“For endurance purposes”
-“You guys don’t care, do you?”
-“I need a WARM one”
-“Enough to stay relaxed, but not too much”
-“It’s a cold day in HELL!”
-“Can I get a free kick in the balls?”
-“[to another] Want a Session?”
-“We’re getting DRY over here on hole,…whatever we’re on”
The tournament ended with some happy, some sad, some buzzed, and ALL wet players. The award ceremony granted top players awesome prizes and beautiful trophies made of stained wood in the shape of actual discs engraved with the Hab-Rec logo. Whether participant or spectator, disc golf tournaments are fun for all. Keep posted at nextadventure.net for upcoming events!
