Hab/Rec: Update

|

The past couple of years, the weather for Hab/Rec has been a pleasant surprise; sunny, mild. This year, however, was a test of our local disc golf community and their love of the sport. NA employee Joey Moro, aka "Joey Donut's" was one of those who braved the downpour and slung disc for another successful Hab/Rec:

"This year's Hab/Rec was the most fun I've had in a tourney yet. It's always a great group of people that come together to make this event happen. Even though it stormed throughout the 1st round, it wasn't enough to deter Portland's dedicated disc golfers."

The Story of Juicybe Bags: Get 'em now at Next Adventure

| |

Ten years ago the women of B. Luz in the Philippines decided to clean up their neighborhood. They formed a Cooperative and began collecting, segregating and recycling their community's refuse to make JUICYBE bags. With recycled juice containers (mainly from school lunch programs) the women have designed durable, unique hand bags that benefit their whole community by empowering women, raising environmental awareness and providing financial support for other women owned businesses in the area. When Next Adventure learned of this project and got the opportunity to sell their bags in our store, we were all over it! Get a JUICYBE bag: touch lives across the planet, support creative solutions for sustainable living, and help reduce the mountain of plastic bags piling up in our local landfills when you BYOB (bring your own bag). $12.99-$19.99

NA Bike Commuter Profile

|

As part of our wellness program Next Adventure wants to acknowledge employees that take responsibility for their impact on this planet and make an effort to reduce it. This photo is a little out of season but it's a great shot of NA employee Todd Jefferies in his element. Our wellness coordinator Rachel Wagner recently interviewed this warehouse superhero about bikes, books, and bio-diesel. Here’s what he had to say:

Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Salt Lake City. It’s the only place I’ve ever lived… until I moved to Portland close to two years ago.

How long have you been at NA?
I’ve been employed with Next for just over a year… It’s an awesome place to work!

Favorite book?

The Dangerous Book for Boys, it pretty much covers everything a boy needs to know about life.

What do you do with your free time?

I love snowboarding the most, last season pretty much ruled. I’m also getting into climbing more than ever thanks to Next. I went surfing last weekend for my second time ever… I think I might get addicted to surfing.

What kind of bike do you ride?
I ride an old 70’s Raleigh Sport single speed with just a coaster break. It’s very simple and easy to ride… oh yeah and it’s gold.

How far and how often do you commute by bike?
I pretty much just ride my bike everywhere I want to go. I live up in NE off 33rd and north of Ainsworth it takes me like 30 minutes to get to the shop. I think its like 5 miles, getting home after a hard days work is the only tough part.

Staff Bicycle/Public Transportation Stats!

|

After collecting data and crunching numbers, the results are in: About half of the Next Adventure team bikes or rides MAX to work. Of those, over half use these non-car methods to get to work every day.
According to the Bike Geek's Gas Savings Calculator (www.thebikegeek.com) our staff saves about $600 dollars in gas while preventing about 2000 pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere every year. Nice!

Fling'n Disc and Flip'n Burgers

|

Hello out there to all of you who were out at the Beaver State Fling this past weekend. You may have seen us at our booth or for a brief moment before practicing a little mouth to burger resuscitation. Hope you all enjoyed the food and had a good time. It was great to see the pro's out there and get an idea of how far this sport has really come. Here are some pics we took while we were out and about... Next Adventure is proud to be a part of the Disc Golf community; promoting local events like this one as well as other local affiliates like Stump Town Disc Golf and Huk Lab.

Marmot Vs. Mountain Hardware in the Battle-O-the-BBQ's:

| |

It was just a year ago that Next Adventure opened with Mountain Hardware and Marmot and began selling their gear and apparel. These are two incredible companies that set the bar in high quality outdoor gear and who's representatives know all the great details of their products and love what they do. This weekend our local Mountain Hardware rep., Jack Powell, and local Marmot rep., Stewart McCornack, "cooked off" for all of the staff and friends of Next Adventure. As they are both awesome, we felt it might be the only way to determine who was our favorite. Jack's BBQ ribs and Stewart's juicy lamb were incredibly good and it was impossible to decide. Darn it. Two trophies were in order and it looks like they might have to face off again. Jack and Stewart, we know it was a big week for both of you and we enjoyed the food and good company to the fullest. Thank you so much! It's a pleasure doing more than just business.
