Gear Review: Badlands Sil Nylon Wash Basin from Wilderness Technology

While on my big motorcycle trip this summer, access to water was always on my mind. Had a couple jugs, a Sawyer micro filter I never used and some Aquamira to head out with, but wanted a little something more that wouldn’t take up much space. Went to the paddle sports shop to check out some gear for the trip and came upon this little guy: Badlands water pail No, not the spoon. That little orange wad is the fully waterproof and seam sealed Badlands Sil Nylon 8L water pail. It’s tiny and cheap so I grabbed one because what the hell, told ‘em I’d try out some Wildy Tech gear and this thing could be sweet. After getting it home and pulling it out of the small stuff sac a strong, nasty chemical smell came forth, but after a washing with soap and letting it dry, most of the scent was gone. There was a concern it might affect the taste of water but took it anyway wanting to give it a fair run. I got to use it the first time on day 3 on the North Fork of the John Day River near Ukiah, Or. Ran it around in the river a few times then scooped up a couple gallons of water, dumped in the Aquamira then sat it out for an hour or so. It was a relief to find the water tasted fine and the smell was gone. This became one of my favorite purchases for the whole trip just based on how functional and useful it was for being so small and inexpensive. It’s hard to keep clean riding a motorcycle for weeks on end in remote areas so being able to have this guy to get water for tea and scrubbing was nice. Badlands water pail This is a shot of it half full of Missouri River water in the Missouri River Breaks of Montana. Over the 7 weeks of the trip I used this thing a couple dozen times and it never leaked or developed any seam seep and held up great to regular use and constant repacking into the tiny sac. It’s going to come along on winter desert camping, local day trips and the occasional motorcycle jaunt to test its cold weather durability, but I think it’ll do just fine. Need a compact way to manage water on your adventures? Try out the Wildy Tech Badlands pail.
