The Little White Salmon Race: A Celebration of Whitewater and Community - Next Adventure

The Little White Salmon Race: A Celebration of Whitewater and Community

Each year, whitewater kayakers from around the globe gather in the Pacific Northwest for one of the most iconic—and challenging—whitewater events in the world: the Little White Salmon Race. Held on the legendary Little White Salmon River in Washington, this race has become a hallmark of the paddling community, drawing elite athletes and passionate river-runners alike.

The Little White is famous for its crystal-clear water, technical boulder gardens, big drops, and breathtaking scenery. It’s not just a run—it’s a proving ground. And for those bold enough to race it, the stakes are high. The river’s complexity and power make it one of the hardest sections of whitewater being raced anywhere in the world.

More Than a Race

Since its first official event in June 2011, the Little White Race has grown into a celebration of Pacific Northwest kayaking culture and the tight-knit community that surrounds it. The race in years past has been organized by World Class Academy in partnership with the Great Falls Foundation, with an incredible amount of support from the whitewater community—pros, local paddlers, volunteers, and top industry brands all come together to make this event happen.

This grassroots energy is what makes the Little White Race so special. It’s more than just a competition; it’s a gathering of people who live and breathe rivers. Year after year, brands like NRS, Astral, Dagger, Pyranha, Immersion Research, and many more show up to support the event—not just with gear and prizes, but with genuine enthusiasm for the sport and the paddlers who push it forward.

For many, the Little White isn't just a river—it’s a spiritual place. A sanctuary. The race was created to honor this connection and the community of kayakers who treat the Little White like their church (with no Sunday-only rules). It’s a celebration of shared risk, reward, and the bonds formed in wild water.

Format and Rules

The Little White Race is an extreme race that features both singles and team categories. The specific race section is announced at the competitors meeting. While safety crews are placed at key points, racers—especially those in teams—are expected to set safety for one another, just like they would on any normal river day.

Going solo? Know that you’re taking on significantly more risk. Racers in the singles category must be self-reliant and must carry a throw bag at all times.

Long Boats vs. Short Boats

In recent years, organizers have experimented with boat length classes. Currently, there’s no restriction on boat length—unless water levels rise. In high water conditions, race organizers may require paddlers to use short boats for safety reasons. While this can spark debate, it’s worth recognizing the hard work and care that goes into organizing an event of this scale.

Many are watching to see how long boats fare this year—especially whether the Dagger Vanguard will retain its title as the top long boat on the Little White.

No Spectators Allowed at the Little White Salmon Race

Due to the steep, rugged terrain and private land boundaries along the river, spectators are not permitted. Spirit Falls, while legendary, is not part of the racecourse and is off-limits to the public. Trespassing in these areas may lead to prosecution.

Thankfully, the race is well-documented by paddlers and photographers on the water, who capture stunning visuals to share with the broader community.

Save the Date

The 2025 Little White Race is scheduled for April 19th, a few weeks earlier than last year. Organizers are hoping this shift will help avoid high water levels and make for an even better race day.

See you on the river!
