Join Next Adventure for this 45 hour intensive instructor training and assessment in all things Coastal Kayaking. This training will cover learning and teaching theory, communication exercises, feedback structure, and delivery, as well as on water technical skill development, rescue strategies and skills, group management concepts, and much more. The American Canoe Association Instructor Certification is viewed as the gold standard for water safety and paddle sport education by the U.S. Coast Guard and the paddle sport industry within the U.S.
 
This course will cover Instructor Development and Certification through the Level 3 Coastal Kayak venue, but will be divided into two course segments: Instructor Development Workshop (March 12th-15th) and the Instructor Certification Exam (May 1st-2nd).
 
Note: To be eligible for Level 3 certification, candidates must arrive to the course having successfully completed Level 3 Coastal Kayaking Skills. Next Adventure is hosting a Level 3 Assessment on February 27th, but you can arrange a private assessment outside of that date. Candidates without the assessment may still participate in the course, but will only be eligible for Level 1 and 2 Certification. This workshop is a course focused on teaching techniques need to be a successful paddle sports educator and instructor. The course will be a blend of on water and classroom sessions, and will cover beach/riverside teaching techniques. Video analysis of candidates’ skills and performance will also be included, providing a unique opportunity for feedback and self-assessment.
 
If the candidate comes to the course with appropriate paddling, rescue, and some teaching skills the potential exists for the candidate to be awarded ACA instructor certification. Membership in the ACA, SEIC dues and a textbook are also required. Appropriate First Aid and CPR are also required for certification.
 
Instructor Update: Currents instructors looking for an update of certification may join the course for a shorter duration per Instructor Trainer approval and time needed for update. Ira (Pete) Stevens is an ACA Instructor Trainer Educator in multiple disciplines, and long time paddler of all sorts of waters. There is nothing he enjoys more than river boating and fostering a new generation of Instructors.
 
ACA Instructor Trainer Candidate: Michael Bowersox
 
Michael is the Programs Manager of Next Adventure, and teaches internationally with the ACA. Dedicated to environmental stewardship and the growth of paddle sports, Michael paddles and teaches from a variety of craft to provide new insights and perspectives on water, all coming back to his connection to the sea. He is excited to keep learning and growing as a paddle sports coach, especially in new places and environments. Simply put, there is nothing he enjoys more than messing about in boats.
