ACA LEVEL 3 COASTAL KAYAK SKILLS ASSESSMENT
Whether you are preparing to enter the world of kayak instruction, or just looking for a check up of current skills, the American Canoe Association Level 3 Coastal Kayak Skills assessment provides an opportunity for paddlers to receive outside verification of paddling proficiency. ACA Assessment courses have been developed as a tool to allow paddlers a clear progression of skill development. Courses provide progression in skills and paddling venues associated with specific disciplines and paddle craft. Upon successful completion of each Skills Assessment checklist, your Instructor will submit the paperwork and you will receive official documentation of your level of skill from the ACA National Office.
Tentatively, we will be using the venue of Norther Portion of Tillamook Bay, but your Assessor will contact you prior to the course to confirm. The day will begin with candidates meeting at the Garibaldi Marina and a conversation of what the day’s expectations, with the skills assessment being conducted as a journey exploring the northern portion of Tillamook Bay.
The assessment will be set against criteria set out by the ACA and will cover the following topics:
- Launching Landing
- Effective Paddling (Forward, Reverse)
- Turning and Moving Laterally (Static and on the Move)
- Self-Rescues and Group Rescues
- Basic Navigation Skills
- Knowledge of Environment (Hazards, Weather, Tides/Currents)
Please refer to the ACA’s website under the curriculum and skills assessment section for a full detailed checklist of skills necessary for successful assessment as a Level 3 Coastal Paddler.
