8th Annual Down the River Clean Up on the Clackamas River

09/12/2010 - 8:30am
09/12/2010 - 4:30pm
Clackamas River, Oregon

Mark your calendars for the 8th Annual Down the River Clean Up on the Clackamas River on Sunday September 12, 2010!  Next Adventure is proud to be a sponsor for this event. You can count on yet another fun day of paddling and stewardship activities in conjunction with the Clackamas River Basin Council. Registration is open now! If you are interested in serving as a key volunteer for this event (organizer, pod leader or otherwise), please email them at info@welovecleanrivers.org.

With your support in 2009, over 350 river lovers showed up to the Clackamas and hauled out 4,960 pounds (2.48 tons) of trash from 14 miles of riverbank and bottom. As part of the Ripple Effect effort, 15 local artists transformed the trash into handcrafted works of art that are now enjoyed in a new way by our community, completing the full life cycle of our waste.

Tillamook County Water Trail (TCWT) Presentation

08/24/2010 - 7:30pm
08/24/2010 - 9:00pm
Paddle Sports Center (704 SE Washington)

Join Next Adventure and Julie from the Tillamook County Water Trail for a presentation on this fantastic paddling destination. Learn about the work they have completed, have planned, and the resources available to paddlers.

Tillamook County Water Trail (TCWT)
History:
The project began in 2004 when the community noticed we had more and more non-motorized users coming to use the resources. Tillamook Estuaries Partnership: www.tbnep.org (which is a non-profit dedicated to the conservation and restoration of the five estuaries in Tillamook County) agreed to be the facilitator of the project as it fits under our Education program. The idea of the County-wide water trail is to eventually map all five estuaries (Nehalem, Tillamook, Netarts, Sandlake and Nestucca) and any navigable rivers in their watersheds.

The Nehalem was chosen to be the first to be mapped. With the help of a RARE (Resource Assistance for Rural Environments) intern through U of O the project began. He went out for months and compiled all kinds of data such as, existing public boat access, facilities, camping opportunities, etc. After his year was completed, Julie was hired. Fortunately, she had some experience up in the Nehalem area, as she lived up there and owned Nehalem Bay Kayak Co. for 8 years. She took his information and local knowledge from the community and put it into what we now have, the Nehalem guidebook.

Where we are today:
The Nehalem was completed in 2007 and the Tillamook Bay was unveiled this last June 4th,  funded primarily through a  grant from Oregon Parks & Rec. through their Recreation Trails Program

They hold community meetings and send emails to keep the community involved in the project. They have been to countless outreach events locally and statewide including council meetings, an OOPS meeting, farmer's markets, etc.

They have found that putting the guidebook and maps online has allowed the community to access them at their convenience and offer input, feedback, corrections and suggestions.

How people can help:
It's a better project, the more people that become involved. They are now beginning the Nestucca watershed which empties into Pacific City. They are inviting anyone with knowledge of this area to contact them and become involved.
