Video: How to Install a Hobie Kayak Rudder Blade

Why upgrade to a larger rudder blade?
If you often paddle or pedal in choppy water or high wind, a bigger rudder gives you more control and keeps the boat on course with less correction. If you plan to add a sail to your Hobie, the larger blade is strongly recommended. It's a simple, inexpensive upgrade.
How to install it, step by step
- Remove the stock blade. It's held on by six bolts, each threaded into a nut recessed in the fin. Unscrew them with a Phillips screwdriver and keep all the nuts and bolts; you'll reuse them.
- Seat the nuts in the new blade. Press the saved nuts into the recessed holes on the new rudder blade.
- Line it up. Flip the blade so the nuts are on the bottom and align the holes with the attachment plate on your kayak.
- Thread the bolts. Start each bolt, holding the nuts from underneath so they don't get pushed out, then snug them down evenly.
The whole job takes about three to five minutes, even with a hiccup or two.
