The GRIGRI is the belay device most Portland gym staff will hand you and most Smith Rock regulars already own. Cam-assisted blocking pinches the rope when a climber falls or hangs, so holding a partner through a long project burn is less work for your brake hand, while standard belay technique still applies and a hand stays on the brake strand. The ergonomic handle gives a smooth, controlled lower, and at 175 grams it disappears on the harness. Takes 8.5 to 11 mm single ropes for lead and top rope.
