Video: How to Get Into a Kayak

Quick answer: To get into a kayak from a dock, set the kayak in the water parallel to the dock, sit on the dock beside the cockpit, and slide both feet into the boat to stabilize it. Then grab the cockpit rim with one hand, keep the other on the dock, and slide your seat over and down into the kayak. Adjust your foot pegs, then push off.

Getting into a kayak can feel awkward the first time. In this video, we demonstrate the easy way to get into a kayak from a dock without getting soaked.

Start with the right boat

There are several types of kayaks, including recreational, touring, and sea kayaks. The way you get in is more or less the same no matter which you choose, but if it is your first time, start with a recreational kayak. They are stable and have large cockpits that are easy to get into. Once you are comfortable, you can move on to slimmer touring and sea kayaks.

How to get into a kayak from a dock

  1. Put on your PFD. Always wear a properly fitted life jacket before you get in.
  2. Position the kayak. Place the kayak in the water parallel to the dock, as close as you can.
  3. Sit down beside it. Sit on the edge of the dock next to the cockpit.
  4. Feet in first. Slide both feet into the kayak. Your weight on the centerline stabilizes the boat.
  5. Slide in. Grab the cockpit with one hand, keep the other on the dock, and slide yourself from the dock down into the seat. Keep your weight low and centered.
  6. Adjust and go. Once you are settled, adjust your foot rests so your knees are slightly bent, then push off from the dock and paddle away.

Beginner tips

  • Keep your body low. Standing up in or over the kayak is the most common way people tip.
  • Have your paddle within reach on the dock before you get in.
  • Getting out is the same process in reverse: pull alongside the dock, grab it, and lift yourself back onto it before bringing your feet out.
  • Practice in calm, shallow water on a warm day.

Gear up for paddling

Kayaks, paddles, and PFDs are available in-store at our Grand Avenue store in Portland's Central Eastside, where staff can help you choose a boat. A few useful extras are available online:
