Best Shoes for Kayaking: An Expert Review

Which Kayak Shoe is Right for You?

When it comes to kayaking, selecting the right footwear is crucial. Comfort, grip, durability, drainage, and versatility are key considerations for a kayak shoe. Whether you're paddling on oceans, lakes, calm rivers, or navigating rugged whitewater terrain, the right shoes can enhance your performance and overall experience. Here are four top contenders for the best kayaking footwear:

1. Astral Loyak (or Loyak AC)

The Astral Loyak stands out for kayaking enthusiasts due to its exceptional flexibility and grippy design. These shoes are lightweight and can easily fit into a small pack, ready for use when needed. Featuring G Rubber technology, known for its superior stickiness and traction on wet surfaces, the Loyak ensures a snug fit regardless of your shoe size and can be comfortably worn with or without socks. The Loyak drains water quickly, making it ideal for kayaking, river swimming, and paddleboarding. Its stylish look transitions seamlessly from water to casual settings, like a bar after a paddle. However, its low-profile design may not be the best option for wearing over a dry suit.

2. Astral TR1 Mesh

Designed with outdoor versatility in mind, the Astral TR1 Mesh offers excellent traction and breathability. Its tread pattern provides a solid grip on various terrains, making it suitable for trails and hikes in addition to kayaking. Unlike the Loyak, the TR1 Mesh features a thicker sole, enhancing stability on rocky or unstable surfaces, which can be more comfortable on your kayak footpegs. This shoe is supportive and can be worn with a drysuit, barefoot, or with a neoprene sock. The shoe effectively drains water but is also suitable for day-to-day wear. (I brought these down the Grand Canyon and used them for paddling and side hikes.)

3. NRS Paddle Wetshoe

Crafted from durable, insulating neoprene, the NRS Paddle Wetshoe is compatible with both wetsuits and drysuits. This shoe offers a flexible feel and takes up minimal space in a kayak. While its thick soles provide protection against rocky terrain, it is not recommended for extended hikes due to its specialized design. This shoe is perfect if you spend time dipping your toes in chilly water. The Paddle Wetshoe is a practical choice for kayakers seeking warmth, flexibility, and modest hiking capability.

4. Adidas Trail Cross XT

For adventurous kayakers tackling challenging terrains, the Adidas Trail Cross XT is a rugged option. This shoe features a thick sole suitable for hiking with a kayak or portaging through whitewater environments. Its stiff sole aids in edging on cliffs and rocks, offering stability in demanding conditions. The rubber is very grippy and is known to be the replacement for the ever-famous Five-Ten River Tennie. The neoprene cuff prevents debris from entering the shoe while ensuring efficient water drainage. The Trail Cross XT is exceptionally durable, ideal for kayakers who prioritize durability and longevity in their footwear.

The best shoe for kayaking depends on your specific needs and preferences. The Astral Loyak excels in flexibility and grip, ideal for a range of water-based activities. The Astral TR1 Mesh offers versatility with its trail-ready features, while the NRS Paddle Wetshoe provides insulation and flexibility for those who prefer a minimalist design. Finally, the Adidas Trail Cross XT is tailored for adventurers seeking durability and performance in rugged environments. Choose the shoe that aligns best with your kayaking style and enjoy your next water adventure with confidence.
