Adventure Technology Exodus Fishstix

Full Review: The AT Fishstix is a full carbon fiber, high performance paddle designed specifically for kayak fishing. As a lot of companies begin to release paddles for the kayak angler, a lot of them are touring paddles repackaged and labeled with fishing-esque logos and branding. This is not the case with Adventure Technology's FishStix. The blade shape is ideal for any fishing scenario, combining the all day efficiency of a low angle touring paddle, with the size and shape required for quick maneuvering of heavy fishing boats. This paddle feels solid both in your hands and in the water, the super stiff carbon and fiberglass wrap creates easy and powerful strokes. The ergonomic grip took me a while to get used to but once I did, I noticed less wrist and shoulder soreness after long days on the water. I still prefer a straight shaft for the surf zone or more dynamic conditions.

I have the older ferrule system that is preset at 30 degrees feathering, while I wish I had more adjustment options, the solid connection makes the paddle feel like a one piece. Non-Blem 2015 Fishstix have unlimited feathering adjustment and 10cm of optional length adjustment.

The stiffness of the paddle creates efficient paddle strokes in flatwater, but also gives better power transer for surf and rougher conditions. So far this paddle has not let me down, even constant scraping in shallow creeks and using the paddle to push off rocky shores had only left minor fading at the blade tips. The foam core makes for smooth stroke releases and less stress that your paddle might end up with Davie Jones.

The Good List:

  • Hybrid blade shape is ideal for any conditions
  • Durable construction that can handle the demands of kayak fishing and touring.
  • Price is more affordable than a lot of comparable paddles.
  • Foam cores are sweet.
  • Camo coloring makes you feel like rambo.

The Not so Good List:

  • Limited adjustment on cosmetic blems.
  • Ergonomic "Full Control" grips are not for everybody.
  • There are lighter weight full carbon paddles available.

The Bottom Line: If you are looking for a bomb proof paddle for fishing or touring, or want a killer deal on a high end stick, pick up a fishstix.
