Event Report: 2014 Oak Grove Open - Next Adventure

Event Report: 2014 Oak Grove Open

--Event Details-- Event name: Oak Grove Open 2014 Event Location: Champoeg State Park Event Type: Disc Golf Tournament Event Date: 2014-06-14 The Full Report: Team Next Adventure made a strong showing at the 2014 Oak Grove Open. The Open is a C-Tier fundraiser tournament designed to raise money to complete the proposed expansion of the disc golf course in Champoeg State Park. The expansion includes adding holes to make it a complete 18, new baskets, and cement tee pads. Jason Pinkal, Ryan Gwillim, Joey Moro, Erin Reichel, and myself all showed up to show our support and enjoy the hard work that has been put into this lovely course. Tournament director Derek Penfield and his crew developed a beautifully unique course deep in the heart of an oak forest. It was a beautiful day in the early Oregon summertime; the event ran smoothly and the course played wonderfully. Kudos to all the folks in Newberg who have put time and energy into making Champoeg a real destination course. Interest in the course has spiked thanks to new, longer holes that still maintain the integrity of the course. One of the best aspect of the Champoeg course is that anyone of any skill level can enjoy and play with ease. 1st place in the Women's Open division was decisively won by Portland local and young up-and-comer Jackolyn Halstead. Jackolyn turned pro after her win last year at the US Women's Disc Golf Championships. I managed to battle my way into second place despite throwing out of bounds 3 times in a row on the same hole and missing nearly every putt on the back 9 of the first round. Luckily Champoeg offers its fair share of birdies, even to someone without the big distance game like myself. An out of towner, Chandler Fry, took 1st in the Men's Open followed by Team Next's Jason Pinkal. And Advanced Men and Women were owned by team members Joey Moro and Erin Reichel (big thanks to Erin for the donation of her winnings back to the course!!!). And of course, a gigantic Ring of Fire run by Ryan Gwillim with all kinds of NA goodies was fun as usual. The birthday cake my mom sent with me made the day even better, and sharing it with all of my friends was the cherry on the cake (including a surprise visit from team member Celeste Scandiffio)!
