The Full Report: PDGA action finally made it back to Dabney State Park just outside of Troutdale, Oregon. On August 30 to August 31, Mike Gillespie and crew put on a two day, C-tier event. There were three rounds of play during the weekend. Pin placements were adjusted every round, so competitors were able to play almost every hole option in the park. For those of you have who have never played Dabney, it provides a nice balance in hole lengths and technicality. The moving pin placements kept each round interesting.
One unique aspect to this event was the weather. Rounds on Saturday were played in the wind and rain. A number of people were caught out at the course without umbrellas, extra towels, and rain gear as the weather forecast didn’t call for adverse weather. The weather also made for slick tee pads and wet discs. I think the scores of Saturday reflected the added difficulty the weather presented.
Personally, I had a great weekend. I ended up taking first place and shot well above my rating. My success at the tournament was due mostly to solid putting. I hit a number of putts from 40ft to 60ft and I didn’t miss many inside the circle.
A big thanks to Mike Gillespie and his crew for putting on a well ran event. I look forward to seeing what they have in store later this year.
