Oregon Summer Family Adventure Ideas

Oregon Summer Adventures There’s nothing like being outdoors in the Pacific Northwest! We're pumped for the longer, sunnier days ahead and the chance to get out there and do what we love. Whether you’re camping near Mt. Hood or paddleboarding on the Columbia, the Next Adventure crew is all about making outdoor adventures accessible, no matter your age or skill level. We love seeing young explorers out there in the wild! Getting children outdoors not only provides quality time for the family, but it also fosters a meaningful relationship between them and mother nature.

As the weather warms up and you start to plan more outdoor adventures please know that our team is here to get you ready for the adventure of your choice with the gear you crave at the right price. Gear isn’t everything, though. You also need to know the best places to go. Here are a few staff-favorite recommendations for family-friendly adventures in this awesome place we call home.

Hiking Adventures

Looking for a hike that is family-friendly and close to town? Look no further than the Kelly Butte Nature Trail. Situated in southeast Portland, this peaceful trail is just under a mile. It is open from March to October and is great for all hiking levels.

Glenn Otto Community Park is a scenic spot at the intersection of the Sandy River and Beaver Creek. This park in Troutdale is a great place to take the kids due to its open play area, picnic spots, and access to the river.

Wildwood Trail is an iconic hike here in Stumptown, with multiple stopping points throughout it’s 29.6 miles. Pack a lunch and take the kids up to Pittock Mansion or stop off at Lower MacClay Park. This trail has spots for all skill levels and is gorgeous year-round.

Camping Adventures

If you enjoy camping at the coast, Cape Lookout State Park, located near Tillamook is an awesome spot. With ample hiking trails, incredible views, and the beach, you’ll have no problem finding fun things to do that everyone will enjoy.

You can do it all at Lost Lake Resort & Campground. Whether you and your kids prefer hiking, biking, or water sports, this is a great location to try all kinds of adventures. You also have the option of tent camping, Yurts, or cabins.

Crater Lake National Park is one of the most beautiful spots in Oregon—at least we think so. So, it’s a no-brainer we’re recommending you grab a tent and go enjoy the beauty of the park and hiking trails as a family.

Day-Trip Adventures

If you’re looking to stay in the City of Roses but need a fun day adventure, we suggest heading to Washington Park to explore the Japanese Gardens. This peaceful and pristine garden spans 12 acres and has 8 distinct garden styles with a gentle stream running throughout. Tranquility, peace, reflection, and beauty abound, while also being a space to experience an expression of Japanese culture, tradition, and aesthetics.

Columbia Farms, located just off of the Columbia River on Sauvie Island, is a family-owned farm spanning 80 acres. Not only is this a great place to visit for the scenery, but you and your kids can come for the crops! The farm allows you to pick from an assortment of 15 different types of berries (strawberries being one of the key selling points), peonies, and heirloom pumpkins. Make this a full-day trip and hit one of Sauvie Island’s public beaches.

Hood River has it all for a fun-filled day trip. Swimming, kayaking, and paddle boarding are at your fingertips on the Columbia River. What more could you need? Located just an hour outside Portland, this is a great place to explore and has something for everyone.
