Trip Report: Hiking Timothy Lake and Little Crater Lake in the Mount Hood National Forest

Oregon has many stunning wilderness areas, where outdoor enthusiasts can find their haven and enjoy the outdoors. One area that falls under these criteria are the hikes to Timothy Lake and Little Crater Lake. Located in the Mount Hood National Forest, this hiking area will take you on a wonderful journey through picturesque landscapes, serene lakes, and awe-inspiring views of the iconic Mt. Hood. Make sure to bring your hiking boots, and maybe even some floaties to splash in!

Hike 1: Timothy Lake Loop Trail

Distance: Approximately 13 miles round trip

Difficulty: Moderate

The Timothy Lake Loop Trail is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the splendor of the area. The trail encircles the pristine Timothy Lake, providing constant glimpses of its sparkling waters and lush surroundings. The hike is well-maintained and relatively flat, making it accessible for hikers of various skill levels. While I would be slightly lying when I said I hiked this, I did bike the whole loop, and the trail is open to hiking, bicycling and horseback riding.

As you walk along the trail, keep your eyes peeled for the reflections of Mt. Hood on the lake's surface - a picture-perfect moment you won't want to miss. There are numerous scenic spots along the way where you can stop for a picnic or simply soak in the serene ambiance. There are several campgrounds along the Lake, and the beautiful part of this hike is that there are many points to get on the trail, and one can go as far or as little as they want, whether to meet friends and a bigger open area, or walk down the trail a mile or two and find a quiet secluded spot on the lake.

There are also many ways to make a day out of this hike, no matter how far you go, with water activities. While we were there, there were numerous people kayaking, paddle boarding, and some even with small sailing skiffs enjoying the water. The water was also a nice temperature, so swimming in the clean water is a much simpler option as well.

Hike 2: Little Crater Lake Trail

Distance: Approximately 2 miles round trip

Difficulty: Easy

For those seeking a shorter and easier hike, the Little Crater Lake Trail is a delightful option. This relatively short trail leads you to the hidden gem of Little Crater Lake, a pristine, crystal-clear lake formed by volcanic activity.

The trail takes you through lush forests and opens up to a breathtaking view of Little Crater Lake, with the imposing Mt. Hood is visible if you really look for it. The calm and tranquil setting makes it a perfect spot for relaxation and reflection. While this is not a spot where you can swim, it does offer an amazing color of blue in the water, and is visible all the way down to the bottom.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Hike:

There are definitely some things to take into account when visiting either of these spots, with the first point being to make sure to park properly and have some idea of where you are going with some form of map. Make sure to bring water and snacks as well, and respect Leave No Trace principles, so as to keep the area nice for everyone that follows. Lastly, stay on designated trails so as to not impact local plants, and do not approach or feed wildlife in the area.

Both of these lakes are located mere miles apart, so they can totally be both enjoyed in one day. Enjoy your hike (or hikes)!
