Trip Report: Kayak fishing Applegate Reservoir, May 2023 - Next Adventure

Trip Report: Kayak fishing Applegate Reservoir, May 2023

I recently had the pleasure of fishing a tournament at Applegate Reservoir. Applegate Reservoir is a small highland reservoir with mixed banks of clay, rocks, and flooded brush. It holds both Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, along with a few Trout species and panfish. Heading southwest from Medford, Applegate is located on the Oregon and California border. The drive is about 30 miles from Medford and will take you through some beautiful hills littered with small quaint towns, vineyards, and an abundance of wildlife.

Fishing Report - Applegate Reservoir as of 20 MAY 2023 The water conditions at Applegate are almost perfect for everyone this time of year. The lake is above full pool so there is plenty of water to kayak, paddleboard, and enjoy what the lake has to offer. With hiking trails, boat ramps, and quick pulls offs you have access to the entire lake easily.

Fishing Report - Applegate Reservoir as of 20 MAY 2023 On the main body of the lake the water temperatures were in the mid-60s in the morning and high 60s by 2pm. Up Carberry Creek and Applegate River arms the water temperature dropped quickly as these are currently fed with snow run off, causing temperatures to fall into the high 50s. In the Squaw Creek Arm at the very back I found temperatures just above 70 degrees.

Fishing Report - Applegate Reservoir as of 20 MAY 2023 You can currently find Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass in pre spawn, spawn, and post spawn phases. Using topwater in the morning can be effective for active fish. Later in the day with the waters being crystal clear, fishing a DropShot with light diameter line and small baits can be effective to trick the finicky fish.

Fishing Report - Applegate Reservoir as of 20 MAY 2023 The lake was also stocked recently with Trout, and they are plentiful! In the mornings, you can watch their acrobatic show as they leap out of the water. Throwing spinners and spoons to catch them will work all over the lake. Look in the backs of coves or anywhere there is water flowing into the lake. They will chase any small bait you throw at them currently.

Fishing Report - Applegate Reservoir as of 20 MAY 2023 So, whether you are looking to take the family out for the weekend to enjoy the warm water, wineries, and small-town boutiques or try your hand at some fishing. Applegate Reservoir should be on your list of places to visit!
