The Full Report:
The Willamette Cleanup is an awesome event put on by the Willamette River Keepers. The goal is to spread out too many different spots on the Willamette and pick up at much trash as possible. The cool part about this is that there are many different meet-up spots and you can find the one closest to where you live. Living in southeast Portland I attended the "Sellwood Meetup". There were at least 20 people at this location, and we all took off in canoes or kayaks.
Next Adventure sponsors this event and provided kayaks for those who didn't have one so they could help clean the river. I was in a tandem kayak with just me which seemed to be the way to get the most trash as possible. We paddled out along Ross Island and the riverbanks closest to us and gathered as much trash as we could fit in our boats.
When we got back to the park the city had a truck where we put all the trash so they could haul it away. It was really rewarding seeing all the trash piled up and out of the river, I felt like we made a big impact out there. After that, everyone from the event at the different locations met up at Basecamp Brewing for free food! It was great to hang out with likeminded people and chat about the day. All in all, this is an awesome event put on by great people. Check it out for 2019!!
