The Full Report:
The White River Sno-Park area is an incredibly gorgeous and accessible place to experience the beauty of Mt. Hood. It has stunning views and a variety of terrain to go play in the snow. For many families, this is the Saturday sledding hill. For others, it’s a great place to go snowshoeing through the woods. And for those looking for a bit more of an adventure, there is some great backcountry skiing and snowboarding to be had! For those not interesting or not prepared for the backcountry there is still ample space to play in the snow and keep it safe. Beware that there is a creek running right down the middle of this area and it is often tempting to go play to close to it.
For me and my friends, we skinned up along the creek for about 3 or 4 miles where we crossed the creek one at a time. There are trails along the creek and also through the woods, both are quite scenic. Once that far in, all you see ahead of you are endless white snowy slopes. If you know nothing about avalanches, then this is where your journey should end. Deeper in the White River area there are numerous terrain traps where you could quite easily be hiking in what could become avalanche run out. For us, we all had taken multiple avalanche courses and we were dealing with a very stable snowpack that day. So, from there we picked a slope we wanted to ski and headed for the top.
All in all, it was a great day out there and the views were epic. When we got higher, we turned around and could see Mt. Jefferson in plain view. Whatever your type of adventure, give White River Sno-Park a try! And be safe!
