Best Fishing Kayaks of 2024: Top Picks and Notable Mentions

Fishing Kayaks for Everyone

In the last five years, fishing kayaks have evolved significantly, bringing numerous new options to the market. Here's my review of the top three fishing kayaks of 2024, plus a couple of notable mentions. By the end of this post, you should have a clear idea of which fishing kayak suits your needs best!

1. Native Titan X 12.5

The Native Titan X comes in two models: the 10.5 and the 12.5, named for their lengths. I'll focus on the Titan X 12.5, which I believe is the superior choice. Released last year, this fishing kayak generated considerable hype for good reasons. Native Kayaks packed this model with features, including:

  • Motor mounts on the bow and stern
  • Spots for power poles
  • Swivel seats
  • Sacrificial plates for routing electronics without drilling into the hull
  • Multiple battery compartments

At 12’8” long, the Titan X 12.5 offers ample space for customization. It's ideal for bass fishing, especially with an added MotorGuide Xi3 motor on the bow for navigating tight spots comfortably. However, its weight is a significant drawback—172 lbs fully rigged and 138 lbs for the hull alone. A trailer is necessary for transport, making car topping impractical. Priced at $3,699, it’s a reasonable investment, though fully outfitting it will add to the cost.

2. Old Town Bigwater ePDL 132

The Old Town Bigwater ePDL 132 stands out with its unique ePDL drive, the first pedal-assist drive in the market. This fishing kayak doesn’t require an additional motor, thanks to the drive’s five power levels. Whether you’re trolling for Kokanee or speeding across a lake, this drive covers it all. The Bigwater hull is among the fastest available, making it versatile enough for everything from lake bass fishing to open ocean adventures.

In the Pacific Northwest, this fishing kayak excels in salmon trolling. The ePDL drive allows for periodic breaks from pedaling, which is a huge benefit. The Bigwater 132 ePDL features ample track space for essentials, though some bass anglers might find it a bit limited. The primary drawback is the price: $5,999.99, including the motor and battery. For a more affordable option, the Bigwater with a standard PDL drive costs $2,999.99.

3. Hobie Pro Angler 14 360XR

The Hobie Pro Angler 14 360XR is a significant update to a beloved model. The standout feature is the 360 drive, allowing the fins to rotate 360 degrees for unparalleled maneuverability. Perfect for bass fishing in tight spots, this fishing kayak also features Kick-Up fins that retract upon impact, preventing damage.

The Pro Angler 14 360XR includes Hobie’s H-Rail system for mounting numerous accessories and the exceptionally comfortable Vantage Seat with BOA lumbar support. Additionally, the transducer shield protects your transducer from damage. Priced at $5,899, it’s nearly the most expensive fishing kayak on this list. However, the enhanced drive might reduce the need for additional motors.

Notable Mentions

Old Town Salty

The Old Town Salty is one of the last portable fishing kayaks, weighing around 80 lbs without the drive. Its high rocker makes it excellent for coastal areas, easily navigating waves. It's likely the fastest pedal drive fishing kayak, reaching over 7 mph. Priced at $2,599, it’s the most affordable kayak on this list.

Hobie Outback

The Hobie Outback is a versatile classic, suitable for various fishing environments. It includes numerous features and customization options, such as sections of H-Rail. Whether you’re bass fishing in lakes, trolling for salmon, or fishing for rockfish, the Outback handles it all. At $3,699, it’s moderately priced compared to other models.

If you're new to kayak fishing or considering an upgrade, these fishing kayaks are excellent choices. Visit Next Adventure's Scappoose Bay location, a scenic drive from Portland, to schedule a trial and find your perfect fishing kayak today!
